When/Where

This post made me remember that once I fell asleep at the dentist office while they were drilling in my mouth. What's the most tired you've been and where did you fall asleep? The most tired sounding story wins!

no more fishin'

We're home.

It was a good trip. Except....

My parents are getting older.

We looked at some old pictures/movies and I remember when the pictures were taken 10 years ago, it seemed like my parents were old then. Now, they are much older. It is so sad to watch the decline. One of the main reasons I work out (a lot) is because I hope it helps make the aging process a little easier. It is so sad to watch them become less and less able to move.

More about the trip will appear at some point. Right now, I'm going to go sleep. It's so nice to be back in my own bed!

Of course K noticed....

You know those little places to hang hangers in the car...

K saw them and asked what they were.

I explained they were there in case you're carrying around a pretty dress, and no one is sitting in the back seat, you have a place to hang your pretty dress so it doesn't get wrinkled...

As I said this she launched into her BIG HAPPY SMILE (TM).

Yup!

We need a new model for higher education. In a BIG way.

Quote of the day (from Thursday)

Background: We never eat at McDonalds--not since we watched Super Size Me. When we are on a road trip and have to eat there, I am very sad. I will only eat the fries and the ice cream/milkshakes. Even then, I feel queasy. Fortunately, we don't take many road trips. Anyway, we stopped at one on this trip because my Father loves them. My Mom likes them. (My parents have fond memories of them from a much earlier time.)

Oh yea, the point... When we stopped at the Golden Arches N said, "I hear they have milkshakes here."

I was proud.

Quote of the Day (Saturday)

An onion ring is a little french fry shaped like a circle. (N 6.5)

Before Carseats

When I was a kid, we didn't have carseats. Heck, we didn't even wear seat belts most of the time. It was the early 70s! I remember riding on the console in the middle of my parents car... It was the armrest/cupholder thing, and there was no seat belt. It put me up high so I could see the world. It also put me up high so I would have been catapulted out the front windshield if there had been an accident. Thank goodness there wasn't.

Anyway, this is all to lead in to say I know how to crawl over seats while a car is in motion when I was very young. I got a lot or practice on family vacations. I relieved my childhood and did this today when I wanted something out of the way back and we didn't want to stop again. The girls observed in horror. They were sitting in the middle row of the behemoth rental car we have. I had to get something from the way-way back. I had to go from my front seat, to their row, over them, and into the third row of seats and dig in the way-way back storage area. Then I had to reverse it. N (6.5) suggested I just sit in the third row and buckle up. She wasn't so much concerned with my safety, but rather that I might step on her and / or injure the portable DVD player.

Heh.

T IN CHARGE!

As we got on the second plane for this vacation, the man who took our tickets handed the ticket stubs back to T (2.9) and said, "You're in charge. Can you handle these?" She accepted them and said, "Yes!" (I'm kind of surprised she didn't say Yes Sir! but I don't think she knows that protocol.)

MWH and I were talking and laughing about T being in charge, but she took her responsibility very seriously. She started walking, with an air of supreme authority, to the plane saying, "I'm in charge... hrmph. I'm in charge." Heh. (MWH and I were rolling with laughter as we walked down the jetway.)

N________!

Tonight, K (4) and T (2.95) fell asleep as we were driving back to the hotel. MWH was driving the little girls and I was driving my parents and their car. We met back at the hotel. MWH and I decided we'd take our car and go buy some snacks for everyone before returning to the hotel, but N (6.5) decided she wanted to go in the hotel with Grandma and Grandpa. She promised to be good so we let her go with them.

After MWH found snacky-goodness, we drove back to the hotel. K and T woke up and walked in to the hotel. (Thank goodness! They are heavy.) We were heading up the elevator and suddenly K started screaming and crying. "Where's N_______? We need N_______!!! N_______!" We told her N was upstairs. She was so worried we'd lost N. It was sweet.

Another quote

Nothing like crawling around a hot car on a humid day. (MWH after moving the car seats.)

Swimming quote of the day

K: I told this water that I am not a drownder. I am a swimmer.

Slacker parents

MWH and I are on the computer working away...

The girls just woke up and we just asked K (4) to help T (2.95) go to the bathroom. Heh.

The other morning, as we were packing to leave for the trip, the girls got hungry and then tired of waiting for MWH or I to feed them so they made their own breakfast (cinnamon toast and milk).

Slacker parents = Resourceful kids?

whine

We are driving in a car today. Road trip.

Little T is especially whiny.

We just saw lots and lots o' cows.

When should we break out the new portable DVD player? The girls have never had one in the car before. I am scared that they will always want one. I should probably get over my fear and embrace technology.

Which one? Pick me. (This is a reminder to tell a story when I have a real keyboard.)

Update we just broke out the DVD player and all whining has ceased. The girls are watching Super Why. (I'd link but it's hard on the Crackberry. Check out www.pbskids.org/superwhy if you want to see about it.) They might even be learning something. Heh.

When I was a kid I would have loved a portable DVD player.

Fishing

We are gone.

I am going to blog some. I have some great quotes for you. I also have a story about Frogger. Or, rather, not about Frogger (remember the 80s video game) but about T (2.9) looking like Frogger. So much so that both MWH and I said "FROGGER!" at the same time. You'll have to wait for the rest of the story. I'm heading to sleep NOW.

(Oh, I got to read, most of a book, on the plane! Woooo! Haven't done that since 2001!)

so much

In the morning, when I'm fresh and alert, I have so many blog posts running through my head. However, I have three little girls running through the house and I can't blog. At night, when little girls are sleeping, and I'm wiped out, I have nothing.

Let's see... Did I tell you we got a second Alfred? We're calling him Alfr2d. I love Alfr2d too! I can't imagine vacuuming. Since we got N's kitty, there is MUCH MORE CAT HAIR in our house. Alfr2d picks it up and I love him.

What else? MWH makes pancakes for the girls on the weekends (most, but not all). They love pancakes and I love that he makes them from scratch for the girls. Yes, you read that right. He makes them from scratch. With whole wheat flour. He gets major points for this. I imagine the little girls will have very fond memories of this. MWH is really amazing. I am not sure I have mentioned how amazing he is lately.

Hrrrmmm... I feel like there's more I wanted to say... I did a Zumba class yesterday and again, this week, I got 4 workouts! Yippeee! Working on the OLU class is taking time... I almost have a syllabus done. Woo!

I'll try to make notes through the day tomorrow so I have a better post.

Ouch!

I just walked into a door. I have a lovely bruise in my eyebrow. I need coffee.

Remind me to tell you some of my other brilliant accomplishments (like the one above) later.

Dinosaurs never forget

I forgot to discuss when we went to see Walking with Dinosaurs. It was a great show, and all the three little girls loved it. We saw it when T wasn't quite 2.5, K was 3.75 and N was just 6. We do a lot of dinosaur stuff around these parts because of N (6.5). She's loved them for a while (going on two years I think). So, if you get the opportunity to see the show in your area, we highly recommend it. Check out the web site!

sand, sunscreen, salt, sun

Yup. We went to the beach. It was fun. I am exhausted. I am going to fall asleep in a few moments. I don't know the last time I went to be this early. I'll talk more about the fun adventure on the other blog (later). If you want access and don't have it, leave me a comment.

more than a year

More than a year ago, I added peas to K's (4) fruit shakes. Miss K, also known as the little girl who won't touch vegetables, started drinking them! She's been drinking peas for a year now. (She doesn't know.)

Recently, I finally decided to try mixing up spinach in a fruit shake. I'd read that you couldn't taste it.

I didn't believe it.

I finally got brave and I tried it. Lo and behold, you really can't taste it! I was shocked. When you mix in peas, you can taste them a little, but K never complained so I kept going (or she did once, but then got used to it). Now, with spinach, our fruit shakes taste just like fruit shakes and not very healthy fruit shakes. Go figure!

I was really scared of mixing in the spinach. I was scared it would taste funny and I was scared it would be visible in the shake. It doesn't add any taste and it doesn't show up at all. The blending makes it invisible (if mixed with blueberries, and/or cherries, and/or strawberries).

If you have a kid who is a picky eater, but will drink blended fruit shakes, I HIGHLY recommend mixing in spinach. I add about 1/2 a bag of fresh spinach to the shake (yogurt, soymilk, strawberries, blueberries, peaches, banana) and BLEND. (Sometimes I add apple juice... I prefer soymilk, but if I don't have that I will use apple juice. I use frozen fruit so I don't have to add ice. I mix it in the morning and we drink it within 24 hours.)

I will continue to mix fruit shakes with (frozen) peas sometimes, (fresh) spinach other times, and even (frozen) broccoli sometimes. (Did I tell you about trying broccoli? It adds a bit of flavor, but quite a bit of, um, texture. You have to blend a LONG time.) Yay! K eats drinks vegetables. Woo!

what was I thinking?

I agreed to teach the course at OLU... I am feeling overwhelmed. Yikes.

Zumba continues to be so much fun, but I am definitely tired! Doubling one's workout time will do that. I can't wait until I am used to the new amount of working out!

What else.... Not much. I feel boring because of being tired (see Zumba) and 'cause my head is full from thinking about the course for OLU. It's already been really good for me to start on the course. I've refreshed so much that was rusty that needed to be refreshed. Go Brain!

Cinderella's wedding day

K: I'm pretending today is Cinderella's wedding day.

Me: Oh, who is she marrying?

K: No one. She's just going to put on her wedding dress and walk around.

Heh. Talk about a strong, independent female!

I <3 Zumba!

I got 4 workouts in this week!!!!!!! Zumba is so much fun. It's challenging, and I think with Zumba I'll be able to get in 3-4 workouts a week!!!!! Woo! It's been my goal to get 3 workouts in a week for a while now* (maybe going on 2 years?), but I haven't achieved it. This was a good week.

My new plan is to do my regular aerobics class two times a week and Zumba 2 times a week. I've been tossing around the idea of a personal trainer, but a personal trainer will cost me money and Zumba comes with the what we already pay for for the workout place membership. I do think a personal trainer would be good for me........ Is it possible to have a personal trainer intermittently? Like every other week... Or what is usual? Any one? Zaz?

On another, semi-related note, I have been meaning to record my newest (probably about 2 months old now) favorite healthy snack. Blueberries and oatmeal! I take a big bowl full of frozen blueberries and thaw them in the microwave. Then I make some oatmeal and combine! YUM. It reminds me of the crisps I made at the beginning of summer--except not crispy. (And! Bonus! Antioxidants! Heh.)

*For comedic value, N (6.5) has been spelling NOW, WHO. Don't ask me why. I am not 6.5. (Actually, I know why...she spelled it that way once and I laughed. Now, 200 times later, she still does it and thinks it is funny.)

On your mark, get set, Go...

Crazy!

1. I am teaching for OLU this fall. It will be good, but it will be a lot. I had a meeting with them yesterday. Crazy!

2. I have a new love ... Zumba. It is so. much. fun. I took a class Tuesday and now again today. I hope to do one tomorrow or Saturday (or both!).

I think the Zumba format will actually be good for my back. It has a lot of abdominal work in it in the form of dance. I love the class. My back didn't hurt at all after it. Did I mention it is so fun???? I have been reduced to a grinning idiot about Zumba. Ah, new love.

3. The girls completed swim lessons. T (2.9) was the only one who got moved up to the next level. Go T! N (6.5) and K (4) both are really close to completing the requirements for the class, but they could use some more practice. If we can, I'll get them in to lessons this fall (or sometime before summer next year) and hopefully next summer they will move up a level.

4. N is officially 6.5 now. Ice cream cones and one candle to blow out marked the occasion.

5. [Local state] University contacted me this morning to see if I wanted a (very) part-time research position this morning. My answer was, if it's really truly for 8 hours a week, maybe, but for spring it would be better. The person who called doesn't know for sure if it will happen in the fall, but he is wanting to see what we can do. He and I get along well and I think we'd make a good team.

I think that's it for today's crazy report. Tune in tomorrow to see what else is happening.

This is soooo bloggable.*

I went into Ta*rg*et today and I didn't buy anything.

It's crazy, I know.

Never happened before.

Wow.

I went in with the express purpose of buying a very cheap wading pool for the girls. You know the kind... Hard plastic... about 4 foot in diameter...CHEAP. I was expecting to pay less than ten dollars.

As I walked in, a very nice employee asked if she could help me. I told her I was looking for a kiddie wading pool. She directed me to sporting goods. She said, "There are lots of blow-up ones there." I stopped and said, "But do you have any of the hard-plastic kind?" She said, "I don't know."

I had a limited amount of time because I had to pick up the girls and N3nny. I walked as quickly as I could to sporting goods. I assessed. Nothing but blow-up ones. Cheapest one started at $19.78. I debated. Time was ticking. I knew the toy store with the backwards R had the kind I wanted. I knew they were less than $10. Time was ticking.

I made an executive decision to leave without the very cool-looking, brand-new, foldable, pop-up wading pool. (Great for Travel!) It was hard to NOT buy it. Do you ever find that Ta*rg*et has things packaged and displayed in ways that are so irresistible it's hard walk away and not purchase things you don't need or want? I do.

When I buy cheap wading pools, which I've done 3 or 4 summers now, I always debate the decision. Even though it seems like a good idea to buy a more expensive one, one that will last multiple seasons, it never is (for us) because we never use them multiple seasons. If we use it more than 8 times this year, I'll be shocked. I ran to the toy store with the backwards R and got a hard plastic wading pool AND little dump trucks to play with in it for $8.29.

As it was, I'm happy that we had the wading pool TODAY (it was 99 this afternoon) and it was totally worth my 8.29 investment. Totally.

However, it is still odd to me that I made it out of Ta*rg*et without purchasing anything.

I almost didn't make it out sans new stuff when I saw the shark and pirate beach towels, but I consoled myself with the thought of buying them NEXT time I go.

Have you ever made it out of Ta*rg*et without making a purchase?

(Bonus, the cheap wading pool is marked with a recycle symbol so we can recycle it! Woo-hoo!)

*Heh

whine...

A heat wave has arrived. It was hot yesterday. It will be hot today. It will be hot tomorrow. It will be hot Thursday. We should have a little relief on Friday. UGH.

I have my usual, "It's Frickin' HOT headache." I am not pleased.

I need to write about all the fun summer activities thus far... swim lessons and art camp. I will save that for when my head isn't pounding. (Go Tylenol, Go You can take this headache! I know you can!) Sometimes it helps to encourage your pain relievers.

Summer To Do List

Today, MWH and I bought two new light fixtures for the house! That's the good news. The bad news... We still need to pick out two more, and soon.

Our contractor will be coming shortly to do stuff around the house. I'm not going to put the list of all the tasks he's going to do, but there are several. We need new lighting in 4 areas of the house. We will finally get our new front door! Let's NOT talk about how long we've been working on this, m'kay?

Our cabinet guy finally emailed back about the shelves in the loft and desk area in the bedroom and he'll be able to do stuff at the end of this month or in August.

Not much other progress has happened on this list yet, but I'm thinking about it!

(Note: I did paint the table, and we used it on the Fourth of July, but I have to do one more coat on it (at least).

And, I did start organizing the T clothes to give away. I realized that I am a sucker for soft, comfy clothes. The frilly dresses hardly got worn, but the snuggly, soft clothes got worn a LOT. I felt nothing as I looked at the frilly dresses and much nostalgia at the very worn leggings. Also, we have a lot of little girl clothes with kitties on them. I am having a hard time giving some of them away. In fact, a few more of "kitty outfits" got put into the "for posterity" box.)

Hopefully some more will get done this week. Maybe I should go add "Power wash the decks" to the list so I could cross it off the list. Heh. (It was a nice accomplishment!)

My eyes

I like the way it looks like lasers are shooting from my eyes.

There's a green one...

I got him! Ohhhhh,... there's a black one!.... Whew! Got him!

(This is what T says as she's brushing her teeth. The "things" are cavity bugs. She likes to get them. Heh.)

Princess-y yet practical!

K (4) got these today. They were 1/2 price! Score, we say!

It works well...

for the 3 little girls to be very different!

N (6.49) is my spazzy tom-boy! She loves dinosaurs. She loves mermaids because they swim and live in the ocean DEFINITELY NOT because they are pretty princesses.

K (4) is my calm princess (except when she tries to keep up with N). She loves beautiful, frilly, ruffly, pink, and shiny things. The girlier the better!

T (2.8) is my "life is good" girl. She loves both pretty dresses and boy-ish things. She tends to be a little more of a tom-boy than a girly-girl, but you will find her playing with Thomas-the-train in a pink and ruffly outfit. She says she wants to be Flounder (not Ariel) when she grows up... or Ursula the Sea Witch.

For their swimsuit cover-ups... N will get dinosaurs, K will get fairies, and T will get either sharks or pirates.

I love the diversity and their distinct personalities and interests. It makes life more fun!

Quote of the day (Special July 4th Edition)

Scene: Leaving the fireworks display... Walking under street lights and seeing June bugs...

N (6): Look one June bug is giving another June bug a piggyback ride.*

Me to MWH: Quote of the day.

Heh.

*No, I didn't take the "teachable moment" and go into the birds and the bees. I am quite sure another one will occur.

Documentation

I have so many things I need to document. I have a list in an unpublished post that I'll need to work on.

Here's the first in a series of documenting posts...

Tonight, N (6.45) asked me if the water from the sink had chlorine in it. She knows the pool water has chlorine in it and that you're note supposed to drink it. She knows I don't like chlorine. I told her that yes, the water from the sink has chlorine in it. She asked why we could drink it. I said, it doesn't have very much in it, it's just enough to kill the bad germs in the water so we don't get sick when we drink the water. She asked again if we should drink it. I said, I don't like us to drink it so we drink the filtered water from the refrigerator most of the time.

(Sidebar: Someday, we will get a whole house water filter... Or at least filters on all the bathroom faucets and kitchen sink... When we used to live where we had well water, we didn't have chlorine in the water and I loved it!*)

She asked if her cat should drink the tap water. I said, if you want him to drink filtered water, you may fill his bowl up from the refrigerator. (MWH gave me a look. I believe it was the "you're insane" look.) I am proud of N though. She loves her kitty and she just wants the BEST for him.** Isn't that sweet? She's taking responsibility and thinking... Go critical thinking skills!

*The only downside to no chlorine in the water supply is that toilets get uggy faster. (Uggy being a technical term.)

**Beloved Kitty drank bottled water and filtered water when he got older and had Chronic Renal Failure. I still miss my boy. N's kitty reminds me of him so I think of him when I look at N's kitty.

Today...

I used a power washer and an electric sander. Whoa. These are not typical tools I use. They are cool.

July

How can it possibly be July????

How?

Stuff is occurring. After some drama and stress, we found out we didn't get this project. I think we're a little relieved that we didn't have to fight for what we wanted. You see, since my supervisor left, and it was his project originally, and since the core team wanted him involved, but others (the higher-ups) where we work didn't want him involved, it could have been ugly (TM) to make things work well and try to make everyone sort of happy.*

I am a little sad that we didn't get the project, but ultimately it might be good. We can try for it again this fall and we should still have a good chance.** In addition, we can set it up so that everyone agrees to the conditions before it gets started and when people agree before-hand, instead of after things have occurred, it tends to go better.

Other stuff...

I'm talking to OLU about teaching this fall. It actually sounds like it might be a good opportunity for me. They will help me and support me during the ramp up process. They will pay me pitifully, but there might be more opportunity to do it again in the future as a more permanent faculty member (which also means higher pay).

If I do it in the fall, it will be a LOT of work. It is something I've always wanted to do. I am torn. I will talk with some colleagues this weekend and think about it more.

I powerwashed about 1/3 of our large deck in an hour. I still have 2/3s to go and another deck about 1/2 the size. MWH and I are painting the table too. Yay.

I kind of feel like I've lost my, um, groove. I just feel exhausted, tired, and not like myself. Is it my back hurting that is making me feel bleh, or do I am I just trying to find a good summer routine, or what?

I don't like how I feel right now.

Remind me to tell you all about swim lessons for the little girls!

*One nice thing occurred. The higher-ups were told by an outsider how CRUCIAL former supervisor is/was to the project and the higher-ups seemed a little surprised. They shouldn't be surprised. former supervisor is brilliant and higher-ups took him for-granted.

**Initially, it was very well received. We are thrilled.
