Sunglasses....

I usually buy cheap sunglasses at Target... Because I lose them. A lot. The $5 black ones that only have 99% UVA and UVB protection are what I get (usually).

The first time I bought them I was so worried about the lack of that 1% protection. MWH pointed out that 1) not wearing sunglasses was a lot less protection, and I do that fairly often because of the whole lost sunglasses thing and 2) sun gets in around the lenses and that's got to be a fair amount of UV. Since I figured I'd lose them in a couple of weeks and buy 100% UVA and UVB protection ones, I gave up worrying about that 1%.

The funny thing was, I didn't lose that pair of 99% glasses. They met their demise months and months later when T (21) bent one of the arms to the point of breaking.

I thought about it and realized that sunglasses I don't like, I don't lose. Sunglasses that I like, or cost more than $15 are lost almost instantly. Sometimes they aren't lost forever, but for long stretches. For example, today, I went through our swim bag from last summer to find waterwings/other fun stuff and lo and behold, I found a pair of sunglasses from last summer. A pair that I actually kind of liked, but hadn't gotten to wear for very long. The lenses are a little small, but still fashionable, and otherwise they were good--no scratches either. These were a $14 pair of sunglasses. Want to bet on long until I lose them again?

Once I spent $20 on a pair of sunglasses.... I wore them one time and then lost them. Oops.

I recently bought another $5 pair of 99% sunglasses at Target.... They are VERY crooked. The left lens is about 1/2 inch lower than the right lens. Want to bet that I'll NEVER EVER lose those glasses? And they'll NEVER EVER break.

Place your bets in the comments to play. The winner will get, ummmm, some sunglasses... (Heh.) Hopefully it will take MONTHS before the contest ends.

Beware - I used to buy really cheap watches because I lose them frequently and then my aunt gave me my grandmother's watch when she died. For several years I had a watch I was terrified to lose.

But now I've lost it :-(

And the glasses - you'll manage to persuade N that they are the best thing ever and hand them on to her.

I can so relate to this! I have lost, broken, bent many a pair of sunglasses in my day. Once I left a pair on the roof of my car and drove away. We heard them fall and tried to find them but couldn't! So, I swore I would only by the cheap ones. Apparently Ken thought I had proven myself responsible and last year bought me a pair of Ray Bans for my birthday. I thought he truly lost his mind! I found out later they were $300+!! I couldn't believe it. Stupid, stupid, stupid. Sunglasses that cost that much should have a prescription in them!! Anyway, I took extra care of them and was doing very well for 14 months....and then I lost them somewhere in the Nemo exhibit at Epcot! Ken was mad and made me feel guilty, and then mad. Then he lost his in our cabin on the cruise!! Now, his were a $20 Target pair, but still. When we went to the beach he bought a $16 pair, but I refused to get a pair. I told him I couldn't handle any more guilt in case I lost them in the waves or something. So, then we were at the airport on our way back home and guess what? He broke his second pair of sunglasses! Personally, I found it funny. We decided a $16 Disney pair was really like a getting a $2 pair! Cheap-o! After we returned home, I bought myself a $20 Target pair. Since I am no better than you, I will say we are both going to keep our sunglasses.....until we need a new pair!

I now buy them in threes. I can't get them as cheap as $5--no chains--but I have run throuh four of the six $14 pairs I've bought in the last month. Plus I had to buy a more expnsive pair in NYC when I NEEDED them and was stuck at Grand Central...those are gone.

WHy is this? WHere do they go? SOme of these MUST be going to resurface. Bet I have totally different ones by the time we get to Kansas!
